PROGRAMS AND SERVICES
Community Education Liaison Program
A coordinator works out of the school to provide programs and services to the students attending Eliza Van Bibber School. The program is designed to promote SFN Culture in the school, assist the principle in student retention, organize the Community Native Graduation ceremony and work closely with the teachers in ensuring students are on the path to success. The Community Education Liaison Coordinator also can arrange for tutoring or counseling services to students enrolled in the academic school year.
Education Support – Whitehorse Region
Support is available to Selkirk First Nation students attending elementary school, high school and post secondary school in the Whitehorse region. The education support worker works closely with the CELC will graduation arrangements and student culture trips. This program is designed to promote SFN culture into the lives of the students so that they do not lose their sense of community while attending school outside of Pelly Crossing. The ESO works to keep SFN students in school by setting up any necessary support programs such as tutoring, career counseling, counseling, extracurricular activities and assisting in the financial relief of such programs.
Education and Training Services
Selkirk First Nation has programs, services and specific funding to assist its members who are in post secondary education, employment and training. The employment and training officer provides career counseling and support services to SFN students. The ETO also works with various educational institutions and funding agencies to develop employment training to the citizens.
SFN School Supplies Supplementary Funding
The purpose of this program is to provide supplementary funding to assist parents and guardians in the purchasing of school supplies for their children in a K-12 program. Funding for K-7 is $50.00 per student per year and $65.00 per student per year for grades 8-12(or 13). Please contact the CELC if you are living in Pelly Crossing or the Education Support Worker if you are living in Whitehorse.

SFN Post Secondary Grant
This fund provides secondary assistance (top up) to SFN citizens or beneficiaries attending full time accredited post secondary programs. All applicants must be sponsored by another funding source in order to qualify. Trades and Technology programs are not eligible under this program.

High School Academic Achievement Award
This fund is available for all grade 8-12 Selkirk First Nation students residing in Canada. It is awarded to students who maintain a 75% average. Awards range from $100.00 to $500.00.
Support Services to persons with Disabilities
The Employment and Training Officer Works with citizens identified as having a disability to assist in accessing training that leads to employment. Career Counseling and skill assessments are also conducted to ensure that all areas of development are addressed.
Summer Student Employment Program
This program is a seasonal program that usually begins at the end of the academic school year. It is designed to employ students who attend school full time and will be returning to school in the Fall. Various employment opportunities are developed within the first nation departments to promote interest in working for Selkirk First Nation. At the end of the summer, students meet with the ETO to debrief their summer employment experience, learn more about the educational requirements for their field of interest and develop a training plan. This is targeted at grade 7-12 students.
Employment Insurance Claimants Training Fund
Funding is available for citizens currently enrolled in the Canadian Employment Insurance program. Training must lead to employment to qualify for funding. Please contact your Employment and Training Officer for more information or visit Service Canada.
Self Employment/Business Development Program
This program is designed to assist Selkirk First Nation citizens achieve their goals in starting their own business. The program provides assistance in business planning, setting financial goals, and overall ensuring that the citizen is fully prepared to move into self employment.
Event Donations (Graduation)
Academic institutions can apply for donations for an event for a maximum of $500.00 in which a Selkirk First Nation citizen is involved. Please inquire with the Director for more information.
Aside from these programs and services, the Department juggles several different files, programs and projects throughout the year. Several programs are currently under review and a departmental reorganization is taking place. Citizens are strongly encouraged to inquire with the Director on any of the above mentioned programs.
